When is Black Friday?
The fourth Thursday of November is celebrated as the Thanksgiving Day all over the United States of America. Last year in 2021, it fell on the 26th of November. This year in 2022, it is falling on the 25th of November. Now, let us try to understand what is Black Friday
What is Black Friday?
Black Friday is a name used for referring to two different occasions. Nowadays, it is used to refer to the day that comes after Thanksgiving on the preceding Thursday. Also, being a Friday, it is known as the start of the holiday season owing to the discounts on offer leading to waves of shoppers flocking to the shops and malls.
Secondly, it is also known to refer to the unhateful day of 24th September of 1869, when the unfortunate event of a financial panic took place caused by the panic created by the gold investors due to unruly speculation that spiralled the situation out of control.
Why is it called “Black Friday”, specifically?
Historically, days or events marked by economic distress are labelled as Black, so naturally, the day is called as “Black.” The first “Black Friday” event in recorded history took place on the fateful day of 24th September 1869, after financier Jay Gould and the businessman James Frisk attempted to embezzle money from the gold market, by using the “other” methods. But the attempt misfired and led to wrongful speculation that led to panic and consequently, the collapse of the market. And then in 1929, on the 29th of October, another market crash referred as the Great Depression took place.
But at this point too in history, economically stressed days were not referred to as “Black Friday.” During the 1950s, many factories started referring to the Friday after Thanksgiving as “Black Friday”, as many of their workers were on leave from work as they reportedly fell sick.
Additionally, 10 years after that during the mid-1960s, the traffic cops of Philadelphia started to coin the term as “Black Friday” for the Friday after the Thanksgiving, as they had to work 12-hour shifts owing to the weekend traffic, mostly due to shoppers and the annual Navy-Army football game. It is a statistic suggested by the Bureau of Labour Statistics that mentions that around 70% of the employees in the public sector as well as 40% of the workforce in the private sector get a paid holiday on that day. The term Black Friday started gaining traction and I guess the usage of the word kind of stuck, after that.
