What exactly is Father's Day?

Father's Day is a holiday that honours and celebrates fathers and their impact on our lives. You don't have to celebrate just your biological father on this day; you can also honour grandfathers, stepfathers, adoptive fathers, and other father figures. Show them how much you appreciate them with a thoughtful Father's Day gift! The Origins of Father's Day

Mother's Day dates back to the 1860s, and it was designated as a national holiday in 1914. Then came Mother's Day, which paved the way for Father's Day. Father's Day originated in 1908, when a church in West Virginia held a sermon to honour 362 men killed the previous year in a coal mining explosion. This was the country's first event solely dedicated to honouring fathers, but it was a one-time event, at least in that community.

However, the following year, a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd began her quest to make Father's Day a national holiday. Dodd was one of six children raised by their single father, and she believed that fathers deserved the same respect as mothers.

After a year of petitioning her local community and government, Dodd's home state of Washington celebrated its first official Father's Day on June 19, 1910. Father's Day celebrations spread from state to state over time, and it was finally declared a national holiday in 1972, when President Richard Nixon signed it into law.

It took more than 60 years for Father's Day to be recognised as a federal holiday, and a lot happened during that time to threaten the parent-celebrating holidays. In the 1920s and 1930s, there was a national movement to combine Mother's and Father's Days into one "Parent's Day." Aside from that, some men didn't want Father's Day at all. They saw it as a "Hallmark holiday," created solely for the purpose of a commercial gimmick, and because many fathers were the sole breadwinners at the time, they didn't want their hard-earned money spent on flowers and chocolates.

However, the Great Depression and World War II aided in popularising the concept of Father's Day. During the Great Depression, struggling retailers pushed the gift-giving holiday, and during the war, Father's Day became a way to honour the many fathers serving overseas. Father's Day had already become a national institution by the time President Nixon signed the proclamation declaring it a holiday. This year's date is June 19th, 2022.

When is Father’s Day celebrated in other parts of the world?

Father's Day is observed on different days around the world. In Europe, the United States, and the majority of other countries, for example, the holiday is observed on the third Sunday in June. Fathers are honoured on St. Joseph's Day, March 19, in many Catholic countries, particularly in Latin America. Father's Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of September in many Pacific countries, including Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji.

How Can We Honor Father's Day?

Father's Day reminds us of both the importance and the difficulties of fatherhood. Fathers do not always receive the same level of intimacy and admiration as mothers. Fathers are culturally portrayed as breadwinners, disciplinarians, and authority figures. Fathers have traditionally had a difficult role in our society. They must be distant but intimate; they must work but be present; they must be compassionate but disciplinarian.

So, let's give our fathers a break!

So, as we commemorate this special day for that special person in our lives whom we call father, remember that while he may appear distant, he is probably closer to you than you realise. He is the epitome of "tough love," but it is love. Even if your father, grandfather, or "old man" is grumpy, opinionated, and distant, remember that you are more important to him than you realise. So, if your father is/was present/loving and demonstrated it, show it to him. In either case, overwhelm Dad with attention, praise, and acknowledgement.

He'll love it, I promise!

This year, spice up your Father's Day plans by surprising dad with a one-of-a-kind activity that involves the entire family. Relaxing at home and doing DIY crafts could be just what he needs to brighten his day. Alternatively, you could plan a spa day for him or allow him to become one with nature on a fishing trip.

Whatever Dad enjoys, we've got you covered. If the father or father figure in your life has a passion for cars, enjoys a good steak, or is proud of his athletic past, we have the game, outing, or hobby to bring you all closer together. After you've had your fill of fun for the day, plan a special Father's Day dinner or dessert, and end the night by watching a movie that Dad will enjoy.

So, on this Father's Day, tell your father:

Thank you for everything you do. Thank you for being who you are. We value your presence and the often unseen but significant role you have played in our lives.

Happy Father’s Day!
